日本大使公邸 悠々庵における呈茶
２０１９年１０月１７日（木）日本大使公邸において杉山大使夫人主催で、米国内外の高官の夫人方３０人程の賓客を迎え、日本の茶の湯の紹介を含む昼食会（上野支部長も賓客として参加）が行われた。大使館からの要請を受け、ワシントンDC地区の有志が担当し、昼食会席上での茶の湯の略史についてのスライドプレゼンテーションに続き、昼食終了後悠々庵に移り、２回に分けた茶席の賓客に対し、薄茶のお点前を解説しながら披露し、全員に呈茶を行った。また、ロビーの傍に立礼卓を茶道具とともにセットし、興味を持った方々に、椅子に腰をかけ写真を撮ったり、道具の説明をする機会も設けた。
いくつもの質問への応答も含め、茶の湯そして日本文化への理解を深める機会となったようで、終了後、大使夫人および大使館の方々から、大変盛会となり多くの方々に楽しんで頂けたと謝意表明があった。担当したDC地区の有志は、米国首都におけるアウトリーチ活動の一つに参加する手応えを感じる日となった。
Mrs. Sugiyama, the wife of the Japanese Ambassador to the U.S., held a luncheon for a group of about 30 distinguished ladies at the Ambassador’s Residence in Washington, DC. Our President, Dr. Ryuji Ueno, was also among the guests. During lunch, at Mrs. Sugiyama’s request, the Washington DC District Domonkai presented a brief history of Chanoyu and afterward performed a tea ceremony in the Yu-Yu-An Tea House. The guests were served tea and sweets in two sessions, during which we explained the process of the ceremony and answered many questions. We additionally set up a ryurei-style table in the lobby with tea utensils where interested guests could sit to have their photos taken and learn more about the utensils.
We received sincere expressions of thanks from Mrs. Sugiyama and others at the Embassy for providing so many enjoyable opportunities for their guests to learn and ask questions about Yu-Yu-An, Chanoyu, and Japanese culture. It felt like a very appropriate outreach activity for those of us in the U.S. capital city.
