1月最初のクラスは、残念ながら道路の凍結により延期となり、今回が年明け最初のクラスとなりました。まず初めに「茶道のおもてなし」について説明し、抹茶の歴史や茶室における道具の重要性、そして「和敬清寂」の意味をお伝えしました。この日のお軸には「春入千林処々鶯」を掲げ、その横にはあやめの花を飾りました。お菓子には、「吉慶の鶴」の羊羹を主菓子とし、巳年にちなんだ薄氷の干菓子を添えて、新年の始まりを皆さんと共に祝いました。畳席では、まず運び薄茶点前を解説しながら見学していただき、その後、生徒の方に実際にお点前を経験していただきました。「見ているだけと実際にやるのとでは全く違う」という感想もあり、お点前の奥深さや繊細さを体験していただく良い機会となりました。時間の関係で今回は二回のお点前のみとなり、お二人しか経験できませんでしたが、多くの方が挑戦したいという意欲を見せていたため、セメスター後半では、お点前を実践する機会を増やしていく予定です。また、ワークショップではペン大学の茶の湯クラブのメンバーが二人で割稽古を皆様に教えられるほどに成長しており、心強いサポートになってきていることに感銘を受けました。
The first class in January was unfortunately postponed due to icy roads, making this the first class of the new year. At the beginning of the session, I explained the concept of "hospitality in the tea ceremony," touching on the history of matcha, the significance of utensils in the tea room, and the meaning of wa-kei-sei-jaku (harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility). The scroll for the day featured the phrase 春入千林処々鶯 ("Spring enters the forest, and warblers sing everywhere"), accompanied by irises as floral decorations. For sweets, we celebrated the start of the new year together with yokan called "Kikkei no Tsuru" as the main confection and thin, ice-like dry sweets inspired by the Year of the Snake.
In the tatami-seated session, I first demonstrated hakobi usucha temae while explaining each step, followed by hands-on practice for the students. Many shared their thoughts, saying, "Watching and actually performing the procedure feel completely different," allowing them to experience the depth and delicacy of temae firsthand. Due to time constraints, only two students were able to try it, but since many expressed a strong interest in participating, we plan to provide more opportunities for hands-on practice in the latter half of the semester.
Additionally, during the workshop, two Penn University Chado Club members demonstrated their ability to teach warigeiko to the participants, showing remarkable growth. I was deeply impressed by how they have developed into such a reliable support team.
