Spring Tea Gathering at Shofuso

5月16日、フィラデルフィア特別地区とニューヨークメトロポリタン地区の会員による茶会を松風荘にて開催いたしました。

五月らしい爽やかな晴天に恵まれ、新緑の庭園を渡る風とやわらかな陽光に包まれながら、多くのお客様をお迎えすることができました。

薄茶席・濃茶席ともに、茶道に親しみのある方はもちろん、初めて日本文化に触れられる方々にもご参加いただき、茶の湯の精神や美しさを感じていただけるひとときとなりました。

広間での薄茶席では、昨年の15周年記念行事の一環として、マンハッタンのセント・ジョン・ザ・ディヴァイン大聖堂にて執り行われた「平和祈願茶会」のために特別に誂えられた一揃いの皆具を使用いたしました。「神光照大地」の掛物とともに、荘厳な教会で用いられたお道具が広間のゆったりとした空間に美しく映え、お客様には、お道具に込められた願いにも触れていただきながら、和やかなひとときをお楽しみいただきました。

小間での濃茶席には、「白雲自去來」の掛物をお掛けし、一座を設えました。

白雲が自然のままに空を去来するように、何事にもとらわれず、あるがままの心で一碗を味わっていただきたいという思いを込めた席でございました。静かな小間の空間の中で、一碗のお茶を通して心を通わせ、亭主とお客様がともに一座建立の趣を深く味わう、穏やかで温かな時間となりました。

新緑の美しい五月の一日、皆様と心豊かな時間を共有できましたこと、心より感謝申し上げます。

On May 16th, a tea gathering was held at Shofuso by members of the Philadelphia Special District and the New York Metropolitan District.  

Blessed with the refreshingly clear weather typical of May, we were delighted to welcome many guests, who enjoyed the gentle sunlight and the breeze sweeping through the garden's lush trees. Both the Usucha (thin tea) and Koicha (thick tea) gatherings brought together seasoned tea practitioners as well as those experiencing Japanese culture for the very first time. It was a truly special time for everyone to immerse themselves in the spirit and beauty of the Way of Tea.

For the Usucha session in the Hiroma (large room), we used a full set of Kaigu (tea utensils) specially crafted for the "Peace Prayer Tea Gathering" held last year at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan as part of our 15th-anniversary events. Along with the hanging scroll inscribed with "Shinkō Daichi wo Terasu" (Divine Light Illuminates the Earth), the utensils used in that majestic cathedral harmonized beautifully with the open room. Guests enjoyed a warm, relaxed atmosphere while connecting with the wishes for peace woven into each piece.

For the Koicha session in the intimate Koma (small room), we displayed a scroll featuring the phrase "Hakuun Mizukara Kyorai Su" (White Clouds Come and Go on Their Own). Our hope was for guests to enjoy their tea with a completely free and present mind, just like white clouds drifting effortlessly across the sky. Within the quiet of the small room, connecting over a single bowl of tea allowed host and guests alike to truly embody the spirit of Ichiza Konryu (the shared creation of a unique moment)—creating a deeply meaningful and peaceful bond.
