On October 1, we held a tea ceremony class for the Chanoyu Club at the Penn State University. Seventeen students, along with members of the club, participated.
During the special session beginning at 5:00 p.m., we practiced the otemae procedure using an oita, a large wooden board. This session was held in the quiet tea room primarily for the club members who had helped clean and prepare the space beforehand.
Many participants from the 6:00 p.m. class were experiencing the Way of Tea for the first time. We introduced the meaning of the hanging scroll, Mizu wo kikusureba tsuki te ni ari ("When you scoop up water, the moon rests in your hands"). Through tea utensils appropriate for
October, the participants also learned about and experienced the spirit of wabi-cha and the seasonal atmosphere of autumn.
During the workshop, the participants prepared their own bowls of matcha. By comparing the tea they made themselves with the tea served in the tea room, they experienced how the temperature of the water, the sweets, the utensils, and the setting and atmosphere of the tea room can enhance the enjoyment and flavor of matcha.
We hope this class will deepen the students' interest in the Way of Tea and lead to further growth in both the Chanoyu Club's membership and its activities.
