Year-End Tea Gathering at the Seattle Japanese Garden

ワシントン大学茶の湯クラブ「卒業茶会」— シアトル日本庭園にて

The University of Washington Chanoyu Club held its annual “Sotsugyo-Chakai,” or Graduation Tea Gathering, at Shoseian, the tearoom in the Seattle Japanese Garden. This year’s graduating officers hosted the event. It was a beautiful day, and the garden’s fresh spring greenery created a perfect setting for the celebration.

ワシントン大学茶の湯クラブは、シアトル日本庭園の茶室「松声庵」にて、恒例の卒業茶会「Sotsugyo-Chakai」を開催しました。亭主を務めたのは、今年卒業するクラブの幹部たちです。当日はお天気にも恵まれ、鮮やかな新緑が映える日本庭園の美しい景色の中でのお茶会となりました。

Guests included the hosts’ parents, family members, and friends. In the tearoom’s tokonoma alcove hung a scroll reading Ichigo Ichie—“one time, one meeting.” With that spirit in mind, the student hosts prepared and served tea with care and gratitude to their guests.

お客様には、亭主のご両親やご家族、ご友人の方々をお招きしました。床の間には「一期一会」の掛け軸を飾り、その言葉に込められた思いを胸に、一服一服を心をこめてお点てしました。

Many guests shared that they were moved to see how different the hosts appeared in the tearoom—calm, focused, and graceful. They said it helped them understand how deeply the spirit of omotenashi, or thoughtful hospitality, is expressed through Chanoyu.

お客様からは、普段の学生としての姿とは異なり、茶室では落ち着いた所作で丁寧におもてなしをする姿に感動したとのお声をいただきました。茶の湯を通して、「おもてなしの心」が自然に表れることを改めて感じられたご様子でした。

The gathering was a warm and memorable experience for everyone, truly an Ichigo Ichie—a once-in-a-lifetime encounter to be cherished.

この日の茶会は、参加者全員にとって心に残るあたたかいひとときとなり、まさに「一期一会」の思い出深いお茶会となりました。
